A blend of British and Indian ambiance greets punters at Margate’s newest pub in the former Henry’s electronics store in the High Street.
The bar has retained the Henry’s name as a respectful nod to history to the store that had traded at the spot from 1932 until 2017.
Now, with Paul Singh Tung at the helm, the property has undergone a transformation after 12 months of work to strip out and refurbish the interior.
Paul has some 27 years hospitality experience, formerly running The Riz restaurant in Cliftonville as well as working at and running many other food venues.
The dad-of-two said: “We have done lots of work and it took one year to make it. We have two parts, one is very English and one is Colonial.
“You can also sit by our window that has the best view of the sunset and is lovely.”
The official opening last week attracted a good crowd. Paul said: “People said it was very wow factor and they were enjoying it, it’s the talk of the town.”
In January work will take place to install the kitchen with authentic Indian food being served up from mid to late March.
Paul said: “In March we will do authentic street food and Indian finger food.”
Henry’s is currently opening at 3pm until 11pm. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day hours are noon to 11pm.
After the festive season the hours will be noon to 11pm each day.
Henry’s history
Henry’s at 52 High Street was first opened in 1932 by Denis ‘Henry’ Poupard, who was an electrical engineer. During the war he worked on the then secret RADAR technology.
After the war he concentrated on electrical retail in Thanet and his son Julian became a business partner in the 1960s, adding the photographic services to the store. He also branched out with shops in Cliftonville, Birchington and Broadstairs.
The shop, which was the first in Thanet to sell TVs, closed in October 2017 as Julian was then approaching his 81st birthday.
