Thanet bus driver Garry Warren has raised more than £14,000 for charities over the past two decades through his incredible commitment to long-distance running.
Garry, 56, has been driving buses for over 30 years, including more than a decade at Stagecoach in Thanet. Originally from London, he moved to Margate in 2010 and has become a well-known figure among locals, who appreciate his friendly and approachable nature on and off the bus.
“Driving here in Thanet is far less stressful than London,” says Garry. “People are polite, they say thank you, and it’s a much more old-school, community-focused environment.”
Garry’s fundraising journey began in 2005 when he ran the London Marathon for Shooting Star Children’s Hospice, raising £500. Since then, he has completed five marathons, five half-marathons, and four 10k races, raising funds for charities including Pilgrims Hospice, Children with Cancer UK, Rainbow Ward at the QEQM hospital, Tommy’s Baby Charity, and most recently, Helping Hands for earthquake victims in Turkey. Notably, his Istanbul Marathon effort raised £2,800 for the charity earlier this year.
His passion for fundraising has inspired others in the community to get involved. “I ran the Istanbul marathon with Garry, and it’s thanks to him that I got into running,” says fellow runner Rick Howell. “He motivates everyone around him.”
Garry is known for his rigorous training routine, often running up to 20 miles on weekends, tapering in the weeks leading up to marathons, and even wearing his marathon shirts while driving to raise awareness. Beyond running, he enjoys spending time with his family and travelling, with recent adventures including trips to Paris and Istanbul.
A key part of his fundraising success has been the camaraderie he shares with colleagues and friends. Dave Irvine, who has helped organize charity events including pool darts tournaments and discos, said: “Garry’s commitment to helping children and families in need is truly inspiring. He’s the heart of our depot community.”
Looking ahead, Garry is preparing to take on the Liverpool Half Marathon next year, continuing his mission to support charitable causes while connecting with the community he loves serving every day.
