A Ramsgate man who killed another man following a single punch has been jailed.
Marshall Mitchell, 35, punched well-known Ramsgate resident Jimmy Castle in an unprovoked attack outside a pub in Harbour Street, Ramsgate on Friday 28 March.
During the attack, Mr Castle fell to the floor, hitting his head on the ground and was taken to a local hospital for treatment but later transferred to a London hospital and placed in an induced coma.
Officers attended the scene alongside other emergency services, but Mitchell had fled the area prior to their arrival. Investigators identified Mitchell through reviewing CCTV of the attack, and he was arrested the next day on Saturday 29 March. He was later charged with manslaughter.
On Friday 18 April, Mr Castle, who was 68, died in hospital. A postmortem examination concluded a traumatic brain injury to be the cause of death
Mitchell, of Crescent Road, Ramsgate, was charged with manslaughter and on Monday 21 July at Canterbury Crown Court pleaded guilty.
Yesterday (December 1) he appeared at the same court and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Dean Sycamore said: “This was a senseless act of violence that cost a man his life. A single punch led to irreversible consequences, leaving a family devastated and grieving.
“I welcome the sentence handed down by the court and hope it offers some measure of justice to the victim’s loved ones. This tragic incident serves as a reminder to others: a single moment of aggression can be fatal. Think before you act.”
Wow. Killed an innocent man in a senseless act of brutality but will be out on our streets again in 4 years as he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the face of irrefutable evidence against him. Absolutely crazy.

Sucker punching someone of that age you should be expecting them to possibly die. Should have been murder, I know it cant be, but judge should have taken away the rest of his younger years and let him out as an old man.

Absolutely apalling sentence.It should be life.Trouble is 14 years of Tories not building prisons will only lead to shorter sentences.If someone is raped today it could be 2029 before the persecutor appears in court.The Tories again.Do you remember the 40 new hospitals?Can you name one! This is an above average sentence for this type of killing, no doubt his violent past was an aggravating factor in sentencing despite the guilty plea. He did, relatively, have the book thrown at him on this one.
Remember also, while the offender may serve half their sentence in prison, the rest is on licence and he may well have quite severe restrictions placed on his situation and movement.
There is discussion and controversy over the sentencing of this offence and there have been recent moves for making one punch kills a separate offence with its own, harsher, sentencing guidelines.

the justice system is a total joke , just look at todays news – more prisoners wrongly released again , i expect this waste of skin will be out on licence in few years , after pretending he is a reformed character , its such s pity we dont have americas backbone , he could have been put down like a mangey dog
Jimmy was a lovely guy. I remember him from the 1990s, whenever you would see him he would always say hello and was a character.
