A Ramsgate alleyway that was transformed from a rubbish hotspot to a beautiful community garden has now been turned into an amazing poppy walk to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.
Residents of the Spencer Walk alley officially opened the community garden last year after working together to create an oasis of flowers, trees, plants and seating areas.
Since then they have held summer get togethers and turned it into an amazing Halloween spot last year.
This year the focus has been on the Poppy Appeal with resident Michelle Coombes first raising the idea and rallying neighbours to get creative and join in.
The alley now boasts knitted and crocheted poppies from the Crafty Poppies group, poppies made by using the bottom of bottles, poppies on sticks and in netting and Remembrance banners.
Resident Mabelle Peñalver said: “It was Michelle’s idea. We did something for Halloween last year and that was very successful with all the kids and neighbours making amazing things.
“This year Michelle said she wanted to concentrate on trying to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal.”
Mabelle said she could help, another neighbour then joined and soon everyone was pitching in with poppy creations or offering up space and help.
Michelle contacted the RBL and Crafty Poppies and then came up with the idea of using bottle bottoms to make more poppies – resulting in around 200 on display in the alley. There were then more poppies on sticks from Temu and poppies added to netting.
Mabelle added: “Michelle then went even more bonkers and got us some banners. So we have an alley full of poppies and a safe box for donations.
“Putting it all together was really good, it’s just fabulous.”

Well Peter, there are more people like this in Ramsgate or indeed Thanet, but its the nasty, shouty ones who get the attention from the media often.
They are doing really well, and shows that community action doesn’t always have to be council driven. You watch,now that this has got going, they will go from strength to strength, I have seen other examples elsewhere and it is heartening to see it.Gardens don’t have to be grand affairs with the rolling acres, they can be just as beautiful with pots and tubs.

And what’s the betting the more negative ones (the Rees, Quots, Tongues and Nut Depresseds of this world) don’t come on here and write praiseworthy things about it.

Yet Ramsgate has great lights in the pedestrian area, the harbour arches, the obelisk. Ramsgate put on a brilliant week for the little ships. The harbour is beautiful and will be even better when the boats put their lights up.
