The seeds of love for the plant kingdom have been sown, watered and nurtured at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
A special focus topic in Science has seen Key Stage 1 pupils enthusiastically discovering a variety of fascinating facts about various species.
They marked the end of their quest with a fun-filled WOW Day with each class hosting its own exciting activity with pupils rotating through the various sections to enjoy a wide range of experiences.
These included creating nature bracelets, going on bug hunts, painting with mud, leaf rubbing, dissecting plants, watercolour observational drawing of flowers and plants, and designing ‘nature faces’.
Key Stage 1 leader Rachel Farawi said: “To celebrate our plant learning finale, children also arrived at school dressed in autumnal colours.
“It was fantastic to see how engaged they were throughout the whole topic that included naming and identifying a variety of common wild and garden plants such as deciduous and evergreen trees; and identifying and describing the basic structure of flowering plants and trees.
“Our hands-on learning approach really brings science to life, helping pupils to explore and discover in a way that’s both meaningful and memorable.”

*There are about 382,000 accepted species of plants – the great majority (around 283,000), produce seeds.
*About 85–90% of all plants are flowering plants.
*Plants range in scale from minute single-celled organisms such as desmids (from 10 micrometres across) to the largest trees (megaflora) such as the conifer Sequoia sempervirens which can grow to 380 ft tall.
