Mayor of Margate Cllr Katie Pope has visited Garlinge Primary School and Nursery alongside the Deputy Mayor Tamara Campbell and the Town Clerk Ingrid Spencer.
They met with the School Council and were shown around the school by Mrs Northrop (Head of School). It was a great way for the children at the school to have the opportunity to find out about local politics and democracy at work.
The children were excited to meet with the local dignitaries and they gave them a warm welcome and were keen to ask questions and find out the work that Cllr Pope and Deputy Mayor Campbell do in the community.
The children enjoyed finding out about what role the Mayor plays in Margate and how she is visiting local schools around Thanet. Cllr Pope spoke about the Thanet Youth Council and hoped that some of the children would like to join it when they are older.
The children also told the Mayor they were already involved in designing a new play area for Garlinge recreation ground and are actively engaged in helping their own community flourish.
Garlinge School Council representatives were thrilled to hold the chain of office and were surprised at the weight and interested in the fact that every previous Mayor of Margate’s name is engraved on each link.
Mrs Northrop said: “It was an exciting opportunity to meet the Mayor and Deputy Mayor enabling the children to understand their role in the community. We look forward to welcoming the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to future Garlinge and Thanet Endeavour Learning Trust events so even more children can experience this exciting opportunity.”
