Thanet Wanderers SEND rugby squad sessions restart after end of summer celebration

Wanderers SEND squad end of summer fun

By Sarah Mountjoy

The Thanet Wanderers SEND rugby squad brought the summer season to a close in style with a lively end-of-summer picnic filled with laughter, games and plenty of food.

Families, players and coaches gathered on the field to enjoy a relaxed afternoon of fun and friendship. Everyone contributed to a colourful picnic spread with tables laden with fruit, crisps, cakes and sandwiches. Children and parents tucked in and made the most of the sunshine and good company.

The day was about more than food. An inflatable soft-play area proved a huge hit with younger children while the sumo wrestling suits brought out the competitive spirit in players and parents alike. There were games on the grass from light rugby challenges to cone relays that showcased the energy that has become a hallmark of the SEND sessions.

Crucially, the event was for parents as well as players. The SEND programme offers an environment where children can be themselves without judgement and where families can meet others who understand their journey. It reflects the heart of Thanet Wanderers SEND rugby: inclusive, supportive and community-minded.

Volunteer coaches praised the turnout and the atmosphere, noting how far the squad has come. The programme continues to grow and offers children with special educational needs and disabilities a safe and welcoming route into rugby.

Training sessions start up again tomorrow (September 7) and run every Sunday at 9.30 am at the rugby club. New families are warmly welcome to come along and see what SEND rugby is all about.
