Dispersal powers used by police during Broadstairs fireworks event

Police patrols

A total of 24 people were dispersed by police working to disrupt antisocial behaviour during the fireworks event in Broadstairs on Wednesday (August 27).

During the event, officers were on patrol as part of Kent Police’s ongoing support through the summer months in the town, when they became aware of a group of young people causing a disturbance in the Harbour Street area.

Due to being underage, alcohol was seized from the group and disposed of by the officers.

Using the additional powers of a dispersal order which was already in place, police identified those who were causing issues and ordered them to leave the area immediately.

Their details were taken and they were warned that anyone who was found in the town after being told to leave would be arrested. The 48 hour dispersal was brought in at 4pm that day, and will be in place until later today (29 August). The order may be renewed as appropriate.

Officers also worked with CCTV operators and partner agencies to ensure those leaving the town did so in a safe manner.

Incidents included a youngster being attacked by a group of youths in the harbour car park.

In total 24 dispersals were given, and three people were searched. Two were given community resolutions after cannabis was found and seized.

Ch Insp Ian Swallow said: “From the start of the summer, I have been clear that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated and officers will aim to disrupt anyone who thinks they can cause upset to the community.

“The majority of people who visit Broadstairs are able to do so responsibly and without causing offence to others. But those who think they can come to the town or beach and make a nuisance of themselves have found out that their behaviour is not welcome here and that action is taken against them.”

    • Sadly, todays cross section of society appears to me to be about self importance, being ill mannered and having a total lack of respect for others.

      • Just practicing to be Reform voters like their gullible parents. If they think Farage is the answer to their basic instincts of me first, they’re going to get a big shock. He’s doing what all populists do, offer you a solution to a problem he and his wealthy backers have created. History repeating itself!!

        • You may wish to disagree with me, but I don’t believe for one minute that the yobs/louts – call them what you will are interested in politics in the slightest.
Incidentally, populism/populists are neither left or right, e.g. Corby viz Farage.

        • I’m intrigued to know what you saw that I didn’t that gave you the insight to know that their parents are gullible, who they vote for & what they may think.

        • Good grief, what a sad muppet you are to bring your version of politics into this anti social problem.
Please endeavour to crawl out of that gutter you inhabit you total loser and muppet.
Intelligent and friendly answer only, please.

  1. Today as I was returning from lunch on my mobility scooter, two youths had laid their bikes down on the pavement preventing access, I askeed them to move the bikes, and was told I must say please etc. Why? This was deliberate anti-social behaviour, bikes should not be on the pavement in any manner, but laying them down to block access was a deliberate act to offend! Duuurh!

  2. It was funny watching the clearly middle class kids trying their best to look, sound & act “gangsta” but unfortunately failing to impress anyone apart from their peers. Just like every generation before, my included.
Are we meant to believe that underage drinking is a new thing? Maybe drinking in the street is now more prevalent & causing the problems due to underage drinking in pubs now being impossible. It was a bit more accepted when I was younger.
My first “pint” in 1980 as a 14 year old was in one of the old fashioned drinkers pubs in Margate old town. My mates & I knew if we got too loud or annoying a simple look off of the Landlord was enough to calm us down. Drinking in the street was never considered, but then nor was carrying a knife or attacking anyone. So. I guess as they say, “times have changed”.

    • Times have changed indeed. In the 60’s a couple of us, aged 16/17 used to drink in a village pub (saloon bar) up in Medway. The local bobby often called into the pub as part of his duty, I guess. He would have known our ages because we used to go to the same school as his daughter! I would add that we were always well behaved because of the privilege bestowed upon us.

  3. These kids need boot camp! Military training! Every morning the youth shall pledge allegiance to our Great and Honourable King! They need to understand how fortunate they are to be British and start putting up our mighty flags all over every single building across this glorious land! We need to stop all the French and Germans coming into our seaside towns. These towns should be exclusive to only British Tourists. We need to ban the flying of French and German flags and add that ridiculous Irish flag to the list. This is England mate. Just go home already and take the feral children with you. Otherwise just send the working class to the workhouse. Round em up and clean up this mess for honours middle class Christian BRITISH citizens! Glory Britania!!!

  4. Chief Inspector Swallow is out of touch with the conduct of his Officers on the ground. If he bothers to speak to the beach security at Margate, he’ll no doubt find out as I did, that when they have requested assistance for help from Margate Officers – they’ve refused to get involved. Not my words – the security officer’s words!

  5. Is this a wind-up?
Don’t people know the difference between the crusader flag of StGeorge and the rather weird union flag that has a red saltire on it that nobody in Ireland- 26 counties or 6 counties – ever uses or probably wouldn’t recognise! 45% of Scots last time voted for independence. If a vote was held tomorrow, a majority would probably vote for independence. As for being a “Christian country”, 57% of the adult population has no belief in any sky God, and we are all more civilised as a result!

  6. Exactly like you said Keith! Can’t wait to see you later for a pint down the pub. Those Irish can have Northern Ireland back it is a total dump. The only way to fix it is to replace the existing Irish with good Christian Monarchists of British Heritage. Thank you for your generosity in terms of that donation to our Fly Our Mighty Flag campaign, we’ve already raised over six hundred quid. Thanet is going to covered in flags mate. It’s going to be the most bloody magnificent sight you’re ever going to see. It’s time we get our empire back! LONG LIVE THE KING ! ! !
