As part of their Courageous Advocacy work in Year 5, children at Birchington CE Primary School have been learning about actress, singer, presenter, author and politician Floella Benjamin.
The children found out about the work she does to increase representation in film and television, in being an active advocate for the welfare, care and education of children throughout the world and the impact she has had in creating a primary curriculum that challenges racism to prevent it from happening.
The children decided to write letters to their local MP, Sir Roger Gale, to ask for his thoughts around these sensitive topics as they knew that he had once worked in radio, film and television becoming an MP.
They were delighted when they received a letter back from him and so invited him into school to find out more about what issues are important to him and how he is a courageous advocate for his constituents.
Sir Roger visited 5C at Birchington who were keen to take part in a Q&A session to find out more about his role in Parliament, what a typical day looks like for him and some of his interests and campaigns.
They even introduced him to Coco, the class hamster who took a keen interest in Sir Roger. Teacher Rebecca Caie said: “This was a brilliant opportunity for Sir Roger to come into school to talk to the children about his life being dedicated to serving the people of Thanet.
“There were lots of brilliant questions and the children are keen to visit the Houses of Parliament next year. We hope that Sir Roger has inspired some future MPs here in Year 5.”
so they have found old roger , or windy as he is known at westminster – didnt he have a garden party to open ?
