Garlinge Primary School & Nursery join UK’s biggest active travel challenge

Garlinge children joined the Sustrans’ Big Walk and Wheel 2025.

Garlinge pupils have taken part in the Sustrans’ Big Walk and Wheel 2025.

Children were invited to walk, wheel, cycle or scoot to school as part of the UK’s biggest inter-school active travel challenge.

Sustrans’ Big Walk and Wheel took place from 24 March to 3 April and inspired families to make active journeys to boost health, improve air quality and discover how these changes make a difference to the world around them.

Mrs Kerrigan, Healthy Schools Coordinator, said: “It was a great opportunity to integrate physical activities into daily routines. Walking to school can help boost communication and language opportunities by using the time to discuss the things you can see. It can support children to build a solid foundation for social-emotional well-being.”

Miss Stannard, Eco Schools Coordinator, added: “It was a fantastic chance to build upon our previous Walk to School Competition throughout October, by encouraging our families to now experience the joys and calm that walking to school during the springtime can achieve. It is a great chance to experience the nature and new life that this time of year brings.”

Theodore said: “I liked it because it creates less pollution.”

Teddy added: “I had already been practising on my scooter.”

Towards the end of the event, the children and families at Garlinge had completed 3018 journeys in total. The class with the most journeys was 3A with a grand total of 202!
