Children donned their creative thinking caps to become authors for the day at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
Young writers from all age groups were free to choose the subject matter for their stories, allowing them the opportunity to select a theme that holds special interest, importance or meaning for them.
Some children wrote non-fiction about subjects including space, oceans, trains; others wrote stories based on dragons, mysterious creatures, a missing friend.
Once they had worked out their storyline their next task was to create an information blurb and design an eye-catching front cover.
It was part of the school’s celebration of World Book Day this month that also involved pupils dressing up as their favourite storybook characters.
English Lead is Year 3 / 4 teacher Rosie Hart. She explained: “It was so lovely to see all of the children dressed up, discussing their favourite books and reading together.
“They used ideas from their favourite books and texts they have read in English lessons to inspire them to write their own text. They loved being authors for the day – they showed a lot of imagination and the standard of story ideas was very strong.”
The day began with a fun assembly where pupils were shown pictures of staff hidden around the school reading and they had to decipher who they were.
Another popular activity was the whole-school DEAR – drop everything and read – which took place in the corridors. Pupils enjoyed finding different and unusual places to settle down with a book, while older children read to their younger counterparts during this time.
Assistant Head Teacher Athanasia Papa-Adams said: “It was wonderful to see the oldest and youngest children reading books together and discussing what the books were about.
“It was a brilliant day that brought the entire school together for the love of reading. It was a delight to see our children become authors for the day and write their own text whether that was non-fiction or fiction.
“The children looked amazing in their outfits and it was a perfect way to celebrate our ongoing focus of developing a love of reading for everyone.”
