World Book Day at Birchington CE Primary school’s is a favourite for the pupils.
They love reading and relish the opportunity to celebrate their love of books.
The school places high value on the importance of reading and this can be seen by its vibrant book corners, playground Reading Sheds, warm and inviting library, Reading Ambassadors and Birchington Book Club every Wednesday morning.
For World Book Day children were able to come into school dressed up as either their favourite book character or in their pyjamas with a cuddly toy to snuggle up to whilst sharing a good story.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to meet up with children from different year groups to share stories together. Some beautifully creative bookmarks were made with a variety of different materials which the children loved showing off to each other.
Just to show how much they all love reading, everyone took part in a sponsored Readathon, raising some £1200 to buy new books to share at home.
Sarah Highsted, Reading Leader at Birchington, said: “We simply love reading here at Birchington and what better way to celebrate this than by getting the children to read as much as possible.
“They particularly enjoyed sharing stories with children from other classes and listening to stories read by different adults. We were astounded by how much reading everyone did during the Readathon to enable us to buy some very special books.
“The staff have been so inspired that they have now created their own Birchington Book Club in the staffroom.”
