Last week, pupils and staff at St Laurence Junior Academy embraced the magic of storytelling and literacy as they celebrated World Book Day with an exciting lineup of activities.
Kicking off the festivities were Phil and Gary from Wizard Stories. Their workshops not only enhance speaking and listening skills but also provide children with the confidence to create and share their own stories. Their visit to St Laurence was met with enthusiasm, setting the tone for a week filled with literary adventures.
Throughout the week, pupils took part in a variety of exciting activities, including online workshops designed to foster their passion for books. These sessions allowed students to explore different aspects of storytelling and creative writing, further enhancing their literacy skills in a fun and engaging way.
A highlight of the celebrations was the school-wide ‘Strangest Place to Read’ competition, where children were challenged to find the most unusual location to enjoy a book. The competition saw many imaginative entries, but in the end, Sophia claimed 1st place, Jason secured 2nd place, and Sophia-Leigh took 3rd place.
Adding to the excitement, the school partnered with The Margate Bookshop to ensure that every child received a book on the day. Instead of the traditional World Book Day voucher, pupils were given the opportunity to pre-order their books in advance, making the experience even more special.
Mrs Mountjoy, the school’s English Lead, said: “It has been wonderful to see our pupils so engaged with reading and storytelling. The visit from Wizard Stories was a real highlight, and it’s fantastic to see the children’s enthusiasm for books continue to grow.”
