Margate RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crew have investigated a report of a drifting rigid-inflatable dinghy possibly in difficulties off the north Kent coast
HM Coastguard received a report at around 5.30pm today (March 9) of what appeared to be a rigid-inflatable dinghy drifting on the tide without lights around half a mile off the harbour at Margate.
In the failing light and with no response to radio calls from the coastguard, Margate RNLI’s D class inshore lifeboat was tasked to investigate, Margate Coastguard Rescue Team also responded to observe from the shore.
Once launched, the lifeboat was quickly on scene and found the craft with three occupants who were safe and well and not in any need of assistance.
The lifeboat escorted the craft back to its launching site at Barnes Car Park where it was met by members of the coastguard team and once the vessel was safe ashore, the lifeboat returned to station.
This service call marked the first for the station’s new Launch Authority, Kieran Sharrock who has now completed his training and is in the rota responding to the sound of the pager.
Derek Amas, Lifeboat Operation Manager, RNLI Margate, said: “The initial concern for the welfare of the craft was well founded given the failing light and we are always thankful for such concerns being passed on. We are happy to investigate such concerns rather than assume otherwise and urge the public to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard in coastal emergencies.”
