Ramsgate RNLI crew has assisted in an international operation after a cargo ship reported a fire onboard this morning {February 18}.
The Grand Brasile, which is about 15 miles of the Ramsgate coast, issued a Mayday call at around 9.35am after discovering the fire on one of the decks.
The ship was headed to Antwerp in Belgium from Le Havre in France.
Ramsgate’s all-weather Diamond Jubilee and the Dover lifeboat were launched alongside vessels from France and Belgium.
A HM Coastguard spokesperson said: “A fire reported within one deck of a cargo vessel 15 nautical miles south-east of Ramsgate has been contained.
“HM Coastguard was informed at about 9.35am and on-board fire-suppression measures have been activated. The crew is accounted for and no injuries have been reported.
“The RNLI’s all-weather lifeboats from Dover and Ramsgate have been stood down after being sent as a precaution. A tug boat, Dutch fixed-wing aircraft and a French vessel with firefighting and towing capability have also been tasked to support.”
A Ramsgate RNLI spokesperson added: “We launched the All-Weather Diamond Jubilee and Dover lifeboat at the request of HM Coastguard at 9.51am to a vessel with a fire onboard which had broadcast a Mayday.
“The vessel was situated 15 miles ESE from Ramsgate and had reported no steering or power.
“Our crew did not have to board the boat, and the fire was contained by fixed fire equipment onboard and the boat’s own crew.
“Ramsgate RNLI and Dover RNLI stood by whilst the fire was extinguished and awaited the arrival of tugs to tow the vessel.
“Both lifeboats have now been stood down and returned to station.”
