The influences and inventions from the Roman Empire that still have a major impact on our world have been explored by children at St Nicholas-at-Wade CE Primary.
The Year 4 group is investigating the civilisation’s culture, heritage and its place in history.
Based on the theme ‘I Am A Warrior’ pupils children have delved into the lives of historic figures such as Claudius, Boudicca, and Julius Caesar, uncovering the various contributions of the Romans to our society.
Their learning journey has included an intriguing focus on Gladiator School, where they have engaged with the legendary fighters Spartacus and Spiculus, experiencing the thrill of the Roman Colosseum.
To further enrich their educational experience, the group enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Roman Museum in Canterbury.
Workshops included an opportunity to learn about ‘Everyday Life in Ancient Rome’, ‘Roman Technology’, and hands-on activities involving catapults and mosaics.
Guided by the museum’s highly knowledgeable staff, the children explored numerous exhibits and artefacts, earning the chance to stamp their own Roman coins and craft mosaics reminiscent of the era.
Year 4 teacher Sara Patterson said: “These invaluable workshops and experiences breathe life into the children’s education, allowing them to learn from experts, handle historical artefacts, and engage in practical activities.
“We strive to present our children with a plethora of opportunities to enhance their learning and foster a deep understanding of Ancient Rome.”
Head Teacher Taralee Kennedy believes in supporting classroom learning with specialist visits. She said: “We are so lucky to have such brilliant research opportunities in our area.
“The museum helped add an extra dimension to what the children are discovering in their lessons and it was a valuable part of their topic work.”
