There is a buzz around reading at Birchington Primary School with the opening of five new Reading Sheds.
Reading is already something enjoyed and celebrated by pupils and staff throughout the school day, but the addition of the new Reading Sheds means children can share and savour books of all kinds during their break and lunch times.
Ms Bant, the school’s Chair of Governors, officially declared the sheds open on Tuesday 15th October during a ceremony attended by a group of some of the oldest and youngest pupils in the school.
Each Reading Shed includes boxes containing a range of new, exciting fiction and non-fiction books for children to enjoy, along with soft blankets and cushions to cosy up with. Signs for the Reading Sheds have been beautifully illustrated by members of staff, making them look attractive and inviting.
This has been made possible through school fundraising, donations from the school community and PTA, members of All Saints Church congregation and the Crispe Charity.
The school’s site manager Mr Drew and members of the English Hub have spent months behind the scenes constructing and curating the sheds for the children.
They explained: “We know that reading opens up new worlds for children, giving them the opportunity to explore new ideas and visit new places. We know the Reading Sheds will give children even more time to share these important experiences with each other at break times as well as in the classroom.”
