Open day with free taster sessions at Ramsgate youth theatre’s new base

Free taster sessions with Stage Door Arts Academy CIC

Free performing arts taster sessions for three to 18 year olds will be on offer in Ramsgate tomorrow (September 28).

Stage Doors Arts Academy is hosting the sessions at its new base in the former WHSmith shop (now Sugar Rush) in Ramsgate High Street.

Stage Door Arts has supported more than 11,000 children and teenagers in performing arts since starting in 2007.

Youngsters come from across Kent to the award-winning classes and to take part in the shows, which have included Billy Elliot, Annie, Matilda, Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, Hairspray and more.

Many former students have gone on to success in the West End, on cruise ships, on the big screen and on TV.

The latest Stage Door alumni is Maisie Waller, who will be on stage at the Novello Theatre in London this October for the latest production run of Mamma Mia.

Last year Maisie, 23, was one of 14 contestants battling it out on ITV’s Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream.

On Saturday at the High Street venue there will be a chance to see the new space, meet some of the staff and take part in fun, free workshop style classes to gain an idea of what the new weekly sessions will involve.

There will be the chance to dance, sing, act and try some acrobatics and circus skills.

The sessions are open for three to six year olds at 11am and then seven-18 years at noon until 2pm.

Stage Door Arts CIC’s previous studio spaces are being demolished to make way for new flats. The stage school is part of the community group that has fundraised this year to take over the empty WHSmith in the High Street. So far, the new arts hub base includes three rehearsal studio spaces, a cabaret performance venue, an in-house coffee shop, which also features an additional performing space.

A full sized theatre is also being created, meaning the group will have its own on-site space to put on big musicals and productions. They are continuing with ongoing fundraising events and shows with the hope to get more equipment and opportunities for their members.

Principal Heidi Moran said: “We are so excited to be able to offer even more to our youth theatre kids and teens with our new venue. We have always specialised in theatre and performing arts. Now we are returning to our roots and it will be our main focus to give as many opportunities for our members to perform and gain experience on the stage.”
