Nuclear strike film Threads to be screened at converted Cliftonville bunker – with tickets on offer

Threads will be screened at the Margate Bunker

A film about a nuclear strike on England will be screened in a former war bunker in Cliftonville.

British film Threads is a journey back to 1984, when the fear of a nuclear apocalypse loomed large. Created during the peak of the Cold War tensions,Threads sent shockwaves through audiences with its raw depiction of a nuclear attack on England. Now, 40 years later, Threads has returned to the spotlight with a special BBC Radio 4 documentary airing on Saturday, September 21.

Hosted by Jude Rogers, the documentary features fascinating insights from Director Mick Jackson and Neil Kinnock, the Labour Party leader at the time of the film’s release

Filmmaker Martin Stirling, known for his hard-hitting films for Save The Children, is hosting a series of special screenings of Threads in the Margate Bunker.

Once designed to withstand a real nuclear strike, the bunker has been transformed into a stylish multi-purpose studio.

Joining Martin will be Bunker venue host Nathan Lang; author and entertainment editor Georgina Wilson-Powell (also known for weekly local listings guide Don’t Miss Margate);and Margate Bookie speaker and local historian Will MacLachlan — plus two surprise VIP guests to be revealed on the nights.

For those who want to win tickets, just head over to Instagram and get creative. Share a video of yourself reacting as if you’ve just experienced a nuclear strike or post a pic of a ‘distress message’ you’d write to the world after the unthinkable.

Then tag Instagram accounts @bunkermargate and @margatewalkingtour for organisers to spot your entry.

Deadline is 5pm Friday September 20, and winners will be announced (and content shared) on the above social channels just before the BBC Radio 4 documentary at 8pm on Saturday, September 21.
