King Street Seven opens ‘Wild & Free’ exhibition in Margate

Large scale work by the King Street Seven

A huge group painting of Kingsgate Bay created by seven semi professional artists is on display this week at the King Street Gallery in Margate.

‘The King Street Seven’ – comprised of Claire Pearman, Lily Seoud, Linda Betteridge, Janice Ballantyne,  Victor Agius, John Bradley and Rebecca Mackay – each painted individual panels for the 6 metre width canvas.

The seven are tutored by artist Brian Davenport who runs the non-profit Looking Ahead project, providing skills and training for young people with additional needs to help them find work in the local community.
Rebecca said: “This has been an exceptional project because the canvas is 1.4m (H) x almost 6m (W).  We’ve enjoyed the benefits of supporting each other as we painted individual panels in our own styles whilst keeping the overall painting a true representation of the coastal view.

“As a group, we decided we wanted to seek a home for the painting in keeping with the ethos of the studio and our commitment to art in the local community. So, we’re really excited that East Kent Hospitals Charity has expressed an interest in accepting our offer to donate the painting to them once the exhibition has ended – and they’re looking into the logistics, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed,

“We hope to raise money for Looking Ahead and for the charity which accepts our painting.”

The ‘Wild & Free’ exhibition runs from today (September 9) to September 13 with a private viewing today at the King Street Gallery, 11 – 13 King Street, Margate  between 5.30 pm & 7.30pm.
