Emergency crews attend after person becomes stuck on cliff ledge at Kingsgate

Emergency crews attended Broadstairs last night (July 27) after a person got stuck on a cliff ledge at Kingsgate.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called at 7.05pm to reports of the person stuck on a cliff ledge near to Whiteness Road, close to the Captain Digby pub.

Margate’s D class inshore lifeboat were just being rehoused following an earlier incident when they were called to the scene.The Margate and Herne Bay coastguard teams were also diverted to this incident with Deal Coastguard Rescue Team, Kent Fire and Rescue and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) also responding.

The lifeboat crew were able to observe the casualty on a chalk outcrop and stood by providing safety cover while the shoreside agencies recovered him to the safety of the main cliff top where casualty care was provided by SECAmb after which the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.

Three fire engines also attended and crews used line access equipment and a ladder to reach the male, who was then walked to safety across the ladder.

Fire crews finished at the scene at 8.30pm.

Lee Button, Launch Authority, Margate RNLI said: “When people get into difficulties, be it at sea or in cliff incidents time is of the essence and thankfully the calls from the public allowed a rapid response and speedy resolution to both incidents. In a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
