Northdown Year 3 pupils explore Botany Bay

A trip to the beach for Year 3 pupils from Northdown Primary School

Year 3 pupils from Northdown Primary School, Margate, whose classes are named after local beaches, have embarked on an educational trip to Botany Bay.

Stone Bay class made the short walk to Botany Bay to learn about “Changing Coastlines,” the topic of their term. During their visit, the children were able to observe various coastline features, collect and identify different shells, sketch the scenic views, and engage in some creative sand sculpture building.

The day was filled with fun and learning and pupils enthusiastically declared it “the best day of Year 3!”

Matthew Harris, headteacher of Northdown Primary School, said: “Living by the seaside, it is so important for our pupils to explore their local area, and we are so lucky to have so many wonderful bays nearby.

“The children get the chance to compare the different areas and explore the natural beauty around them – it also helps them to understand better where their class names have come from.”

The school’s aim is for each class to visit a different local beach over the course of their time at Northdown Primary to enrich the pupils’ learning experiences and create a deeper connection with their community and natural surroundings as well as mixing indoor education with the joy of outdoor exploration.
