Children at St Nicholas at Wade CE Primary have been gifted £1,000 to buy books by Margate Rotary Club.

Head Teacher Taralee Kennedy said: “We were all speechless at the generosity. It is a wonderful gesture and it has made a real difference to the variety and breadth of reading material open to our pupils.”

Children and teachers compiled a wish list of the type of books they would like – and Adam Taylor from The Bookshop by the Classroom in Westgate added a further 20 per cent to the fund which led to a bumper delivery.

Pat Buckley from the Margate Rotary Club and Mr Taylor presented the books to St Nicholas at a special worship that focussed on gratitude and love of mankind.

The school’s reading ambassadors had the chance to look through the books and say a special thank you, before stamping them in readiness to adorn the library shelves.

Mrs Kennedy added: “To celebrate the delivery the whole school enjoyed a reading afternoon on the field to explore the new books along with the familiar reads from the library. They had a great afternoon reading and sharing books.

“One of our curriculum drivers is ‘Every Child a Reader’ and this delivery has given our children new titles to excite them and fresh books to explore. It was wonderful to see the children so excited to get their hands on the books, and it is a great boost to our ongoing literacy drive.”
