Margate Caves 160th Anniversary

April 1-16, Margate Caves, Margate

10am-5pm

Sunday 2 April marks 160 years since Margate Caves opened to the public.

This Margate landmark has had something of a chequered history, having started life as a chalk mine it then transformed into a subterranean wine cellar and private dining room, complete with rare ice wells and wall paintings.

When local shopkeeper John Norwood took on the lease, he brought with him some colourful marketing ideas to bring the site to the wider public. He named the Caves Vortigern’s Cavern, claimed they dated to 454AD, and charged 3d admission!

An account of the opening on 2nd April 1863 makes the first reference to the Caves’ wall paintings, describing the elephant, crocodile and our much-loved lion, as well as two worksthat haven’t survived of a tiger and prisoners in chains.

In celebration of opening Norwood made it free for children to visit throughout Easter weekend. And to commemorate the anniversary, children can once again visit for free, when accompanied by a paying adult, on 1st and 2nd April. Visitors can enjoy our Easter Holiday trail through the Caves, which will focus on the Caves quirky history.

There’ll be templates available from the Caves to create your very own Chalk Up poster todisplay in your window, or on your fridge – and share your achievement on #chalkupmargate.

Submissions will be shared through the Margate Caves accounts too – look out for your very own Chalk Up shout out!

Every day volunteers will be chalking up what makes you proud on the chalkboard at the Caves.

The Margate Caves are at 1 Northdown Road, Margate CT9 1FG. Open every day of the Easter holidays from 29 March to 16 April, 10am to 5pm.
