What If … a construct by Julia Rogers

Julia Rogers’ much anticipated new exhibition ‘What If …’ opens at Hold Creative Spaces in Ramsgate today (October 7).

Following her celebrated solo show last year ‘Ancestral Guide’, exploring her emotional ties with her childhood, Julia Rogers has now developed work on different realities, where she  reinterprets omens and elevates the ordinary in a sideways glance at the search for meaning.

.Since she was young Julia has been a ritualistic follower of the old adage ‘See a penny, pick it up, then all day you’ll have good luck’. It wasn’t until September 2014 when she started to take it more seriously, documenting and preserving her found ‘luck’. Her collection has inevitably grown since then, as did the problem of how to present them. Her luckiest day, months, years, places and sides are her metrics and in this exhibition she has had to take up the role of cartographer as she explores this intangible concept.

This show looks at prediction, hopes and desires in these uncertain, chaotic times through thought provoking connections, humour and nostalgia.

“What If … a construct by Julia Rogers” opens today , 6pm-8pm, and continues until Sunday 9th Oct, 11am-5pm daily. Hosted in the newly renovated gallery at Hold Creative Spaces, Penstone House, Albert Street, Ramsgate, CT11 9HD

Remote at the Palace Cinema Broadstairs

October 8, 4pm-5.30pm

The Palace presents a special screening of Remote in partnership with Turner Contemporary and Artangel.

The film will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with co-creators Mika Rottenberg and Mahyad Tousi.

REMOTE follows Unoaku, an ex-pat architect living in a solar-punk apartment in Kuala Lumpur, and four other women living on their own in Iran, Argentine, Puerto Rico and South Africa. While watching a popular South Korean dog grooming show, the five women discover they are connected through mysterious portals hidden in their homes.

Set in a near future, Mika Rottenberg and Mahyad’s Tousi’s film explores what it means to be connected in this global age of pandemics, and the escalating reach of technology into the lives of billions of people around the world.

Remote co-creators Mika Rottenberg and Mahyad Tousi explore the impact of the technology and convenience we take for granted. You can discover more about the creative process and the production in the pre-recorded Q&A, which follows the screening.
