Continued police presence following attack on officer at St Laurence graveyard

Police vehicles are still stationed by St Laurence graveyard following the attack on a police officer last night (February 2).

Residents say the graveyard was blocked to pedestrians today and police appear to have been searching the area.

The police officer was attacked by a group of people and knocked unconscious at around 9.50pm.

He was treated at the scene for a head injury and taken to hospital as a precaution.

He has since been discharged.

Officers carried out searches of the area last night with assistance from the National Police Air Service helicopter.

It was reported that one of the people who assaulted the officer may have been in possession of a firearm and armed officers attended the scene as a precaution. No firearm was discharged.

Kent Police is conducting ongoing enquiries  into the incident.
