Post Office confirms closure of Broadstairs’ York Street branch

The Post Office service in York Street, Broadstairs, will close on January 31.

The current post master will be ending his role. The franchise is being offered on the Post Office website with a closing date of December 31 to register an interest.

The advert says Post Office Ltd is looking for a successful retailer to incorporate a Post Office Main into their existing or proposed business.

A Post Office spokesman said: “: “The Postmaster for York Street, Broadstairs has resigned and the branch is due to close at the current location on 31 January at 1pm. We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure. The nearest alternative branches are Broadstairs and Dumpton.

“We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services. We would like to assure customers that the Post Office is committed to providing a Post Office service in this area of Broadstairs and we are working hard to try to maintain service in the area.

Closure and consultation

It follows the closure in June of the Reading Street Post Office. A consultation was opened in January for views on

launching a service at The Village Newsagents, 12 High Street, St Peters.

Post Office services would be delivered from an open-plan till alongside the retail counter of the convenience store.

The opening hours would be Monday – Friday: 5.30am – 6pm; Saturday: 5.30am – 1pm; Sunday: 5.30am – 12 noon.

The consultation runs until

  1. Madness. The York Street post office must not close. It is more than a place to buy stamps. The location is special and queues are legendary.

  2. This must not close , its a brilliant friendly efficent post office , well managed with great staff and care for their customers unlike other local post offices that close earlier than their advertised hours and treat their customers with contempt !

  4. This is why Royal Mail shouldn’t have been privatised. It is an essential public service. That’s why we have only Nationwide as a bank in Broadstairs and only one Post Office now.
