Defeat for Broadstairs 2nd XI cricket team

On Saturday (June 3), Broadstairs 2’s visited Old Wilsonians. Skipper Andy Marshal won the toss yet again and after seeing that some early morning rain had sneaked under the covers  asked Old Wils to bat.

Bradley Ellison opened the bowling once again with Farjad Yasir, the weather and wicket suiting Ellison’s away swing, he soon found the top edge of the dangerous Ranjans bat, Luke Palmer on his return from university taking the catch. Farjad continued his impressive start to the season, beating the batsmen’s edge time after time.

Ellison then picked up another wicket, finding the edge of Lovelocks bat and Lee Hewitt taking the catch. He also picked up 2 more wickets from the outside edge, Palmer and Marshall taking the catches, old wills were in trouble at 28-4!

Wilsonians skipper Chris Scott was now at the crease and after managing to survive an early drop catch, steadied the innings along with Louis Pryor and moved the score onto 152 before Marshall broke the important partnership dismissing Pryor for 50.

The Old Wils skipper then opened up and played some cheeky reverse sweeps and pulls to finish unbeaten on 93 and giving Broadstairs a target of 188 to win.

Ellison finished with figures of 15-7-15-4 and Marshall 2-0-18-2.

As previous weeks, Lee Hewitt and Brian Simpson started positively and struck some early boundaries. Hewitt eventually finding the hands of the point fielder which brought Luke Palmer to the crease. Palmer played confidently and although lost a couple of partners in Simpson and Lewis Hewitt, he formed a solid partnership with the experienced James Bond.

These 2 pushed the total  when Bond was caught on the boundary just after the drinks break, none of the Broadstairs batsmen could hang around with Palmer with wickets falling regularly, Palmer eventually fell for 57 and despite a late charge from Farjad Yasir Broadstairs finished 34 runs short.

Doug Forbes claiming 4-25 and Tom Sullivan 4-43.

The defeat sees Broadstairs drop to third, they welcome second from bottom Nonington this week determined to get back to winning ways!
