Art, film, open mic and more promised at the Dead Hoarse! Festival

The Dead Hoarse! Festival is coming to Margate

A festival of collage, painting, sculpture, photography, assemblage, print, and film is coming to Margate.

Dead Hoarse! Festival consists of exciting artists from Margate, Ramsgate, Folkestone, Deal, Canterbury, Herne Bay and beyond.

It is the brainchild of SoundLines’ poet, Gary Studley and Pie Factory Margate will the venue for the combined exhibition and week of creative arts events.

Hastings born, Gary has been Kent based since the 1980s and says there is a wealth of creative folk living in the county. Running monthly spoken word events in Canterbury, Deal and Herne Bay, plus teaching creative writing and art at the latter’s Beach Creative CIC, he has met many artists giving their all to the community for free. This prompted him to create the week-long event specifically to showcase local talent.

Being a writer, performer and artist, he realised this would require a venue open not only to artists exhibiting in more than one discipline, but to practitioners running workshops and performances, too. Pie Factory Margate was the perfect choice.

As well as conversations with art-lovers and proposed visits from local schools, Gary and collaborators will also lead daytime events, including  workshops on poetry and prose writing; and creating flotsam art. In the evening there will be spoken word performances and open mic opportunities for both poetry and prose, with proceeds from donations going to two local charities.

At workshops and performances the festival organisers will be collecting voluntary donations of tins and packages for Family Food Bank in Millmead Children’s Centre and also raising funds for Thanet Coast Project.

The open-to-all launch will be from 6.30pm – 8.30pm on Friday, February 23. The exhibition will open daily from 10am -5pm, February 23 – 27 and 10am to 1pm on February 28.

Additional timings for evening events and information on artists and workshops will be publicised on Dead Hoarse! Festival’s Facebook page.
