The Great Birchington Seagull Trail

Monty’s have collaborated with a community knitting group who have knitted seagulls to hide in Birchington shop windows.
All the children need to do is find as many of the seagulls as they can, fill in their names on the trail sheet, and present their sheet at Monty’s of Birchington to receive a small sweet treat.

Queer Nature – After Hours

Join this fascinating guided tour created and led by Fenja Schultz to learn about animal homosexuality, trans* and intersex animals and the many ways in which Nature transcends the categories imposed on it by humans.
Young Explorers can follow the all-ages self-guided trail to find out how animals express themselves and form families, encouraging curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

Ramsgate Day
August 15
Ramsgate Town centre will burst into life as Ramsgate Day on August 15 bringing together local bands, buskers, dance troops and more.
The theme this year is inspired by Sanger’s Circus, which once had its own amphitheatre in Ramsgate High Street. One of the most fascinating figures in circus history, Ellen Sanger, later known as Madame Pauline de Vere, the Lady of the Lions, will be brought to life through a special costumed guided walk and talks exploring the extraordinary story of Ramsgate’s circus heritage.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Madame Pauline throughout the day before she takes her place at the head of the afternoon parade, accompanied by magnificent life-sized lion and elephant puppets in tribute to Ramsgate’s circus past.
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a packed programme of free family-friendly activities, performances and workshops across the town centre.
Young aspiring performers can learn new tricks with circus skills specialists This Bean Spins and Phases Margate, who will be offering opportunities to try a range of circus disciplines and discover hidden talents. There will also be children’s craft workshops, face painting and plenty of opportunities to get creative.
Adding to the spectacle, Looping the Loop will bring the magic of the circus to life with their life-sized elephant and lion puppets, vintage clowns and charismatic ringmaster, creating colourful encounters and unforgettable photo opportunities throughout the day.
Visitors can also marvel at giant bubbles drifting through the town centre, while local community groups, performers and organisations help create a vibrant festival atmosphere.
There will also be performances by local musicians and dance groups, celebrating the talent and creativity of Ramsgate’s through the generations.
Adding a touch of science, creativity and discovery to the programme, Discovery Planet will invite visitors to uncover the secrets behind some of the circus’s most impressive feats.
From testing your balance like a tightrope walker and exploring the science of juggling to creating giant and unusual-shaped bubbles, children and adults alike will have the opportunity to experiment, learn and play while discovering the STEAM principles behind the spectacle.
The team will be at Ramsgate Space and Albert Court from noon to 4pm, no booking, just drop in.
The day will culminate in a community parade led by Samba Ya Wantsum, Madame Pauline de Vere and giant lion and elephant puppets. The procession will feature children showcasing the circus skills they have learned during the day alongside costumes, banners and creations from the workshops.
The parade will conclude in the heart of town with a magical bubble finale as performers, participants and spectators come together to fill the air with bubbles.
There will also be a Ramsgate Day trail. To claim your badge, visit the places on the trail and find the letter attached to each seagull displayed in the windows, write down the letters to work out the secret message and hand the completed flyer into Potters in Queen Street.

Celebrating 100 Years of Thanet’s railway stations… Tickets give you access to: The One:One Collection / Hornby WonderWorks experience / Original Hornby factory space showing Hornby Brands and exhibitor stalls.
The open weekend will be held across two sites – Hornby’s WonderWorks visitor centre and the neighbouring One:One Collection, which is yet to open to the public, and houses an extraordinary line-up of full-size railway exhibits.
From model aircraft and die-cast vehicles to half-scale classic cars, live demonstrations, and build-your-own activities, it’s a celebration of hobbies, heritage and play for all generations.
Visitors will have the rare chance to explore the One:One Collection’s full-size exhibits, including the Black 5 and Royal Scot locomotives, Churchill’s funeral carriage, and the original Euston station departure boards. The collection also features a working O gauge layout and large-scale engineered models.
Inside WonderWorks, families can enjoy interactive train layouts, a Scalextric ‘fastest lap’ tournament, and a ‘Make and Paint’ zone from Airfix.
Younger visitors can let their imagination run wild in the Trainmaster play area, while enthusiasts can explore displays from Hornby, Airfix, Corgi, Pocher and more.
Alongside the railway heritage on display, the open weekend will feature exhibitors and layouts from across the hobby and heritage railway community, including the Watercress Line Heritage Railway Trust, Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, Southern Locomotive Ltd, Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway Supporters Association, The Kent & East Sussex Railway, Ashford Model Railway Museum, Horton Common and many more.

Bugs, beetle and butterflies

With the guidance of Artist Nick Morley (@linocutboy) use foam stamps to make colourful prints inspired by the bugs, beetles and butterflies in the garden.
First, exploring all the places in the garden that insects, molluscs, arachnids, crustaceans and myriapods like to live, taking photos for reference.
Then making prints on paper using stamp pads and homemade foam stamps in various shapes and sizes.
Foam stamps are easy to make yourself and this is a fun creative activity you can continue to explore at home.
This workshop is suitable for all ages, and abilities.

Standing Against the Flames – Ramsgate’s Fire Brigade 1938-45

Join the Ramsgate Tunnels’ historian for a special talk marking the 85th anniversary of the formation of the National Fire Service, the forerunner of today’s modern Fire and Rescue Service and discover the history of Ramsgate’s Fire Brigade leading up to and during WW2.
This richly illustrated talk will bring to life the story of Ramsgate’s small professional fire brigade in the tense build-up to the Second World War, the rapid establishment of the Auxiliary Fire Service, and their combined efforts on the front line of fire-fighting, before their eventual unification into a single national service.
Along the way, discover more about the equipment they used, the training they underwent, and the vital role they played not only in protecting lives and property, but in supporting one another and the wider community.
Drawing on previously unpublished official records, eyewitness accounts, newspapers, and contemporary photographs, this talk reveals how local firefighters rose to extraordinary challenges, and adapted to become part of a coordinated national force, earning the title famously bestowed by Winston Churchill: “heroes with grimy faces.”
