The southbound A256 Ramsgate Road- the main route between Thanet and Sandwich – is closed due to Southern Water carrying out repairs to a burst sewer main.
The closure between Richborough roundabout and Pfizer’s Roundabout came into effect at 8pm yesterday (Wednesday, 12 August) and is expected to last until August 21. The northbound carriageway remains open.
The diversion routes take motorists via A256 Northbound, A299 Westbound, A2 towards Whitfield to rejoin A256. Expect delays in the surrounding areas.
Another suggestion if heading for the Deal area would be to go to Margate, take Shottendane Road inland toward Manston and then link up with the A256 south past Sandwich.
A Southern Water spokesperson said: “Our teams are making good progress repairing a sewer main on the A256 Ramsgate Road. To enable the repair to be carried out safely, and due to the complexity of the work required, we have closed the southbound carriageway of the A256.
“To help manage flows during the repair, tankers are operating at Bulwark Pumping Station and part of The Quay Car Park remains closed.
“We’re sorry for the disruption this is causing people and businesses in the area.”
The Roadhouse Diner is still open and accessible if motorists tell the traffic people at the barrier they’re going to the diner.
Forgot to add that thanks to Southern Water hitting the Toll Bridge thats shut to traffic too!!

did anyone notice , no one looks very busy in any of the photos , i expect they will all be sat in the van or playing on their mobile phones as usual , this time of year they could work well into the evening , but i expect they will all be gone about 3-30 pm as usual
How can we claim compensation for fuel usage and time. For those that work on discovery park or any other place that requires people to use that route.
Good result for the waterboard workers sat in the truck stop playing pool and drinking cold beer 🍺. & getting paid for it .
Why don’t they make the open carriageway two way as there are two lanes?
They cant as they have closed one lane on the A Skip side too!

My daughter in law coming in from Tilmanstone to margate today was horrendous went through Stourmouth Plucks Gutter and traffic was nose to tail turned up 1 and half hours late for work. Agree with Hatergonnahate should make dual lane into 2 instead of 30 mile diversion
This makes no sense at all. What access plans have been set up for the emergency services? Have they cleared the road restrictions on the northbound approach to the Richborough roundabout? If so they could get the contraflow system working in both directions in single lanes. Can they not plate a single lane southbound for traffic movement?

Please ignore the advice of touching Shottendane Road in Margate. That, along with nearby Manston Rd (near the cemetery and recycling centre) is another dead end due to road works. Driving in Thanet now is getting impossible and I sympathize with all the delivery drivers and taxi drivers.
