Thanet council is urging residents to be cautious and dog owners to keep their pets on a lead after small oil deposits were discovered on part of the isle’s coastline.
The oil has been found between Newgate Gap and Foreness Point in Cliftonville and is described as “small black deposits, likely to be tar oil.”
A Thanet council spokesperson said: “We are aware of some small deposits of oil along part of Thanet’s coastline. The deposits have been found, and are being cleared by the council’s contractor, between Newgate Gap and Foreness Point, Cliftonville.
“This follows an inspection of the beaches after the council was alerted to reports by beach users. Inspections will continue throughout the week.
“Although the deposits found are few and very small, members of the public are advised to be cautious. Advice against bathing will be lifted today (Tuesday 12 May), and replacement signs will be installed at the affected bays.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report any further sightings of oil deposits to the council on 01843 577000.
“Dog owners are asked to keep their dogs on a lead at all times when on the beaches in this location.”
Further information will follow the next round of inspections.
There is a dead seal on the high beach between Sacketts gap and Foreness point. It’s a pity they didn’t arrange removal of that while inspecting the beach. Looks like it’s been there a while now with chunks bitten out of it.
