Two years since the initial launch, Ramsgate Town Shed members now have a permanent home.
The shed group, for those interested in woodwork and DIY projects, was originally set up by Ramsgate Town Council’s Climate Change Task Group, through Chair Cllr Tricia Austin securing a little external funding to get the group going.
After early trial sessions at the old fire station Radford House, there was excellent feedback and a list of people willing to donate tools and equipment. There were also plenty of ideas for sessions, how to involve not only woodworking but other skills as well, along with advice about how a Town Shed could benefit people of various ages and abilities.
A search for a bespoke space has led to the group taking up residence in the building renovation near Home Bargains.
The group of loyal volunteer ‘Shed Heads’ leading the project have spent time fitting out the space as a small workshop.
The new base, in Church Road, opposite numbers 58/60 and right at the end of the Home Bargains car park, now has signs in place and everyone who has made the Shed happen is ready to invite people to come along and join in.
After an official opening, the Shed will initially be open every Monday – apart from Bank Holidays- between 10am – 1pm, starting on Monday 23rd February.
The Shed is open to anyone aged 18+ who either already works with wood or who has a real interest in woodwork. Once started, the Shed organisers will be looking at a wider choice of activities, but this will be prompted and led by the people who attend.
The Shed is run by unpaid volunteers and so opening times are reliant on their availability.
Starting with Mondays, the Shed will grow as demand and new people come and join the project.
It will have a donation or subscription system to support the cost of the space.
Ramsgate Town Shed is inspired by the international Men’s Shed movement, a concept started in Australia and now happening in the UK, Ireland and many other places.
