Broadstairs adventurer Rob Wilkinson is preparing to take on one of the toughest endurance events in the world — the Lapland Arctic Ultra — a self-supported race that will see competitors pull all of their equipment on a sled for 500 km across the Arctic with a strict 10-day time limit.
The race takes place this March in extreme winter conditions, with temperatures that can fall as low as –40°C. Competitors must carry everything they need to survive, including food, shelter and safety equipment, and spend long periods alone navigating snow and ice with no outside assistance.
Rob, a former ship’s captain, says the challenge will be his most demanding to date, not just physically, but mentally.
He said: “In the Arctic, small mistakes can become serious very quickly. It’s as much about judgement and decision-making as it is fitness.”
His background in maritime navigation, often operating in remote and challenging environments, has helped prepare him for the isolation and self-reliance the race demands.
The 43-year-old is undertaking the challenge to raise money for Kent Search & Rescue and Foreland Fields SEN School, two local causes close to his heart. Kent Search & Rescue provides vital volunteer-led emergency response across the county, while Foreland Fields School supports children with complex special educational needs and disabilities.
Rob will be travelling alone for extended periods during the race, pulling a heavily laden sled across frozen terrain, often in silence. He will carry a tracker for safety, but otherwise must rely entirely on his own preparation, judgement and resilience to complete the course.
The challenge is the latest in a series of demanding expeditions Rob has undertaken, combining endurance, resilience and a willingness to operate well outside his comfort zone, always in support of charitable causes.
In 2024 he undertook the Fat Viking challenge to raise funds for end-of-life charity Pilgrims Hospices.
Dad-of-one Rob, who was brought up in Ramsgate and now lives in Broadstairs with wife Marta, cycled 150km through snow, ice and minus 40c temperatures in the Norwegian mountains.
