The Four Candles micropub and brewery will close from New Year’s day.
Owner Mike Beaumont took over an empty shop on the corner of Sowell Street and St Peter’s Road in 2012, turning it into a popular real ale destination and attracting national and international publicity.
It was the first micropub in Broadstairs and only the 12th in the country.
There are now well over 500 in the UK.
In 2014 Mike and his team turned the cellar into a brewhouse and began producing traditional ales and bitters using hops from all over the world.
Visitors have included the Archbishop of Canterbury and Al Murray, the Pub Landlord, who filmed part of his 2016 General Election campaign documentary in the pub.
Mike, 62, said: “After more than 13 years creating Britain’s Smallest Brewpub I have come to the decision that now is the time to say “see you around” to the many wonderful friends who have made it all so worthwhile and who have created so many great sessions.
“The downside has been that I have had far too little time to spend with my family – and my resolution is to put that right in 2026.
“I do not yet know if the Four Candles will continue as a micropub in its present form. I hope it does.”

Pity, that. It was a good meeting place. This is where nuclear families fall down. Unlike Indian-owned small businesses, we don’t have second and third cousins ten times removed to keep the business running. We should reproduce more.
If Indians had owned the shop beforehand, it probably would never have become a micropub.
