Thanet-based theatre festival Making More Waves is back, running from 12 – 16 November with five days of new performances.
Making More Waves celebrates its third year of partnership between the newly–renovated ARK, Cliftonville’s Cultural Space, which will host the festival, and Thanet-based theatre company Looping the Loop, which is committed to making live performance available and accessible to everyone.
The festival opens on Wednesday November 12th with World Poetry Slam winner Harry Baker, presenting a special edition of Something Borrowed with special guest Rachel Long, founder of Octavia Poetry Collective for Women of Colour.
Thursday 13th November begins with a Do I Have to Sell My Soul to Sell My Work?, a panel discussion for professionals with Sally Lampitt (Applause Touring), Mandy Hare (Creek Creative), Barra Collins (Las Theatre), Millie Brierley (The Marlowe Theatre) and Matthew Jones (1 Degree East).
It is followed by Scratch Night, with early-stage performances from Weaver Line Music, Motormouse Productions, a contemporary song cycle from Greg Link and dance theatre from Jodie Cole. Audience and the panel are encouraged to feed back their responses to the shows.
Friday 14th November starts with Alice d’Lumiere’s workshop – Working as a Self-Producing Performance Artist. She’s back in the evening with a short excerpt from her new performance The Literal Translation, followed with Troubled by Suzy Crothers, a new play about escaping the legacy of growing up in Belfast in the ‘90s.
Family Scratch is on Saturday 15th November and involves Detrivore Music’s hip hop adventure, Rebel Tales’ The Drop in the Ocean and Pyweasel, a tale drawn from childhood storytelling, by Zoe & Peter Hammond and Jamie Patterson. It continues with writer Curly Wordy’s Plebbing Up, a spoken word-led experiment in stories from London, and closes with The Trans Lady Sings – Alice de Lumiere’s comedic attempts at opera, with prose, verse, and gender-fluid performance art.
Making More Waves ends on Sunday 16th November, kicking off with James Frost’s talk on The Art of Puppetry, followed by chance to help construct a life-size Elephant and Lion. The festival closes with You’re Not in the West End Now, Katie McGarry’s musical comedy that flips the glitz on London’s theatre scene.
