Kent Police is investigating a reported assault on DJ Fat Tony – real name Tony Marnach- at the Lido in Cliftonville.
The attack is said to have happened in the DJ booth between 1.15am and 1.37am on Saturday {December 14} during the Margate Winter Series event.
In a video on social media the 57-year-old said he was assaulted by another DJ, knocked out and taken to hospital where he spent the night in A&E.
He suffered a black eye and facial swelling.
He added: “I have been advised to stay at home and get well. I’m gutted this happened and I’m gutted that people choose violence especially when what we do comes from a place of love.”
He apologised for having to postpone gigs scheduled for that evening and later posted to thank everyone for the many messages of support.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Kent Police is investigating the report of an assault at the Lido Leisure Centre in Ethelbert Terrace, Margate.
“It is alleged a man in his 50s was working as a DJ at the premises when he was assaulted by another man between 1.15am and 1.37am on Saturday 14 December 2024.
“Patrols and paramedics attended the scene and the victim was treated for facial injuries. He subsequently went to hospital for further medical attention.
“An investigation is underway and officers are urging anybody who witnessed the incident, and has not yet spoken to the police, to call 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/211233/24.”

I was there that night but left before this incident. It is alleged that this was a homophobic attack. I hope whoever is responsible is punished appropriately and people can realise that there is so much more to fight against rather than someone who is not of the same sexual orientation as you. Fight against things that affects all, like homelessness, racism, injustice with the privatisation of national services, the housing crisis, the energy crisis, put your energy into that… but not violence against a DJ who plays house music, one of the well known genres that unites people regardless of age, race, colour, creed or sexuality.
I hope the person or persons who attacked him are brought to satisfactory justice and Tony keeps playing the tunes as he’s always done…
