Laleham Gap Primary has unveiled a fantastic sensory room after a top-notch revamp. With £12,000 from the rugby-based charity Wooden Spoons and £5,000 from the Friends of Laleham Gap the sensory room is now “absolutely wonderful” according to Primary Resources Manager Natalie Hewitt-Zarb.
She said: “We have so many nice new things for our students. We are so grateful to Wooden Spoons and Friends of Laleham Gap for this and their ongoing support.”
The children now have an interactive projector that displays images on the floor. This enables football and splat games for the pupils. There are coloured lights and a new sound system. The students love the new infinity mirror that is sound responsive and comfort hasn’t been ignored, with the addition of new seating.
Carolyn Clifton, who came with Seep Hothi from Wooden Spoons, to cut the ribbon said: “It was lovely to come and see how much the school has developed since it was opened and we helped in the garden.
“It was a special honour to cut the ribbon and declare the room officially open. It is lovely to see it in use and find out how popular it is with pupils. We have been, and continue to be, so happy to help projects like this, where you can see how much help and joy it brings to students.”
Andy Bull and Vicky Flowers from Thanet Wanderers rugby club also came along to witness the opening and see the great work Wooden Spoons continue to do. They were so pleased they are now arranging to run some coaching for the children.
Natalie summed up the day, saying: “We are so pleased with this new room. Without the ongoing support of Wooden Spoons, the students would not have all of this.
“It provides an area for students when they need some calm. It is not just visual but multi-sensory and is used by our speech therapists. It is used by groups and classes for learning too. We are so happy and so happy with the support we get from these lovely charities.”
Laleham Gap, in Ramsgate, is a special Communication and Interaction school for children with autism and speech and language issues.
