People are invited to see, and try out, a self-driving shuttle which will be in action behind Turner Contemporary tomorrow {November 22).
It will be the first time a fully self-driving vehicle has been operational in Kent. The vehicle will then be going to Milton Keynes to operate on-road as part of the government-backed StreetCAV project.
A self-driving shuttle, also known as an autonomous or driverless vehicle, is a vehicle that uses sensors to navigate and move around safely with little or no operator input.
The StreetCAV project (CAV standing for ‘connected and autonomous vehicles’ which vary from one-seaters up to vehicles similar in size to a bus) will install the connectivity and other infrastructure necessary for self-driving shuttles that seat multiple passengers, as well as robotic and drone-based services, to operate safely in Milton Keynes.
The City Council was awarded a £2m grant for the scheme and teamed up with Smart City Consultancy and other partners to trial the technology before consideration is given to rolling it out across the country.
The grant secured in Milton Keynes comes from a wider pot of £18.5 million in government funding being made available to projects that will strengthen the UK’s automated supply chain.
The demo will take place between noon and 1.30pm on the seafront in the car park behind the gallery. All are welcome to have a go.
The demo takes place ahead of the Self-driving Industry Awards 2024 being held at Turner Contemporary from 2pm tomorrow.

i think that turner / tracie emin centre is the best place for the thing , that or sandwich road tip ?
So who do you contact for insurance details if the thing goes awol. It’s going to happen same with the Tesla self-drive systems that’s gone wrong a few times over the years. Can’t claim on insurance if someone isn’t driving said vehicle.

Probably for when it tries to run pedestrians over-as many of them have, you might be able to intervene.
With buses, there’s the added danger of assault, robbery, etc. At least if there’s a driver they can either intervene or call the police.

You think so? I went there a few years back, and loved all the separate and very safe cycle ways from village to village, as well as the huge lake.
