Fresh ‘House’ system for Newington with inspiring heroes

Team spirit and contributions to sport have played a major factor in selecting the new house captains at Newington Community Primary in Ramsgate.

The Year 6 group will have a range of responsibilities and duties in their important roles that involve supporting fellow pupils and assisting staff wherever needed.

They will be the first captains to front the new house points system at the school.

Emma Smith, Personal Development Lead, explained: “Last year, our Junior Leadership Team asked for an upgrade to our house points system, and we as staff agreed this was a brilliant idea.

“All children from Reception to Year 6 were involved in the process of choosing our new ‘House Heroes’. We held class assemblies, led by pupils in Key Stage 2 and adults in the younger years, asking children to consider who was inspirational to them.

“Our PSHE curriculum lends itself to this line of thinking often, so it didn’t surprise us when children were incredibly eager to have their say.

“As we collated the chosen House Heroes, we certainly noticed the same names appearing throughout the school and the choices were inspirational.”

They are astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon; aviation pioneer Amelia Mary Earhart; civil rights activist Rosa Parks; and nature historian and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

Ryan Moore, responsible for sport across the school, added: “Children have always earned house points in PE lessons and we see a huge jump in points on sports day.

“Now that we’ve relaunched the house points system, children now have our four House Heroes on display in classrooms, and they earn points throughout the day.

“House Points can be earned for being a wonderful team player, and for brilliant contributions to school life.

“Now that all children and staff members have been assigned a house, we look forward to planning some House Events during the school year – we expect this to really bring out our competitive sides.”

Head Teacher Hannah Tudor said: “Our house captains are perfect choices to set high standards and set good examples to the house members across the school. We wish them all the best – we are sure they will be successful in the roles as part of this new system for Newington.”

The house captains are: Archie, Lissianna-Rose, Isaac, Domnika, Mansoor, Nancy, Cameron and Emily.
