End of The Goose in Ramsgate as pub set to be transformed into ‘Slice’ bar and grill

Slice is due to open in mid-October

The Goose in Ramsgate is closed while undergoing a refurb and will return in mid-October with a new name as well as a new look.

The Harbour Street pub, which is owned by Stonegate, has been taken on by leasehold tenants David Lengyel and friend Sam Bagley who aim to create Slice – a ‘community hub’ with a food focus.

The venue is currently being stripped out, painted, plastered and having a new kitchen and feature wall installed alongside a deep clean to bring Slice to life.

The ‘back’ room area will become a community space for local groups and organisations which will be free to use. There will also be a coffee club, with refillable coffee, and a screen for those who may want to plug in to give a group presentation.

Sam, who moved from Rochester to Ramsgate this month with partner Tony and their dog, said: “We want to embrace the community and have reached out to organisations like Pilgrims Hospices and Porchlight.

“We will have a useable space for the community and we want to have a coffee club Monday to Friday with comfortable sofas and refillable coffees, somewhere for mums who have dropped the kids off to school and others who might want a coffee and a pastry.

“David is an amazing chef and he is looking at different types of food for the menu.

“We’ll be doing pizzas by the slice, so one person could have as many slices with different toppings that they want, there will be burgers, chicken, vegan, we want to break the mould a bit.”

David, who comes from Hungary, has worked at established hospitality businesses including Honest Burgers, GBK and Vapiano (pizza and pasta).

Sam, who works in the NHS, says there will also be handcrafted cocktails and the venue will be totally dog friendly, having free water and biscuits plus a doggie menu for the more discerning pup!

Sam and David are estimating a £40,000-£50,000 investment to turn The Goose into Slice. Sam said: “It will be totally different. There will be comfy sofas and you can watch TV and relax, not just spend your money and leave.”

A railing is also planned on the pavement outside the property so outdoor seating and heaters can be put in place.

Slice will still show the football and there will be 90s themed nights and music. There are also plans to install a stage early next year. The venue, which Sam says is aimed at ‘mid market dining for everyone.’ will initially have a midnight closing time.

Sam says she and Tony, who also works in the hospitality industry, wanted to live nearer the coast so the move to Ramsgate made sense after she and David decided to take the lease with Stonegate for the Harbour Street property.

She added that there may be more than one Slice to come with plans to open further venues in the future.

All current staff will be staying on at the business.
