The world of Broadstairs library has been explored by children from the town’s Upton Junior School.
Pupils are encouraged to embrace a love of literacy throughout their time at Upton and on a trip to their local library a Year 5 group found out just what makes the centre tick.
They browsed the shelves of different styles of literature, enjoyed a story time session with a visiting author, joined up as a junior borrower and signed up for The Reading Agency’s nationwide ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ which can be completed via a local library or online.
The visit underpins the importance Upton puts in developing a well-rounded love of literacy, including reading challenges, inspirational visits from acclaimed authors to discuss their creative approach, and a Reading Ambassadors group that shared their passion with young pupils at nearby St Mildred’s Infants as part of a wider community engagement.
This year Upton unveiled its newly-refurbished in-school library which is open every day with the Year 6 librarians promoting reading and reading with others. It is also used throughout the school day by classes and children can take books home.
All the books have been co-ordinated to provide a well-organised and exciting space in which to share stories.
Head of School Darci Arthur said: “The local library is such a fantastic resource in the community and a special place for all to get lost in a book. We thank the team at Broadstairs Library for their time and enthusiasm.
“Literacy is a core part of the school’s learning and all ages are actively encouraged to explore the wide and varied world of information and entertainment books give them.”
