Magnifico! – that’s the verdict of children at Newington Community Primary in Ramsgate after a day of Spanish celebration.
Inside, the school was transformed with bunting, flags and balloons reflecting the traditional national colours of Spain – red and yellow.
It was the perfect setting for special guest visitors who hosted an informative assembly for the whole school before engaging children in lively and fun workshops learning the country’s traditional vibrant flamenco dance.
To add to the colourful occasion pupils and staff dressed in the national colours, with some adopting traditional-style costumes.
Adding spice to the learning adventure were kitchen staff who prepared a themed lunch menu including tasty Spanish chicken, chorizo rice or tortilla de patatas, followed by churros.
The connection with the country is firmly entrenched in Newington Primary with all children from Year 2 to year 6 learning Spanish with thoughtful planning ensuring they progress well with their skills to speak and read key vocabulary.
The subject is led by teacher Claire Berryman who organised the festival day, while Mrs C Jones teaches the language across the school.
Miss Berryman said: “It has been wonderful to see the school really focus on developing our children’s understanding of another culture. It really helps pupils understand the importance of learning another language. It was such a successful day with everyone involved.”
Head Teacher Hannah Tudor agreed and added: “Holding a festival day like this helps to raise the profile of children learning another language, as well as bringing another culture in to the school environment.
“As always, all our parents have supported the event fully by providing costumes for their children.
“There was a lovely energetic atmosphere around the school and the workshops and assembly were terrific ways for our children to engage more fully with their Spanish learning experience.”
