A special workshop that revealed how drones are coded enthralled Year 5 and Year 6 children at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
Delivered by Hyett Education in partnership with the RAF, pupils worked together in small groups using iPads to input code that would control their own drones. An experienced instructor introduced the fundamentals of coding and the group quickly began to understand how their instructions translated into real-life movement.
Athanasia Papa-Adams, Assistant Head Teacher, is also Head of Teaching and Learning. She said: “Our children were enthralled as their drones responded to the commands they had programmed, bringing their learning to life right before their eyes.
“From take-off to controlled flight paths, each group experienced the thrill of seeing their programming transform into physical action. The workshop not only developed key computing skills, linked to the RAF and Word War 2 learning, but also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience.
“Pupils demonstrated great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout, asking thoughtful questions and refining their code to improve performance.
“The event was inspiring and made complex concepts accessible and engaging. Experiences like this play a vital role in sparking interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers while helping children understand the real-world applications of technology.
“It was a huge success – the participants were motivated, inspired, and eager to continue exploring the world of coding and innovation.”
My youngest daughter is currently on an intern as part of her degree wherby she is coding logistics for ports and harbours. She is absolutley loving it as part of her science and engineering degree. Women make good engineers.
