The Northwood Singers
The Northwood Singers are proud to present a wide variety of songs old and new! We meet every Wednesday at St Mark’s Church, Ramsgate at 6.15pm. We sing for our own pleasure but also to give pleasure to others whilst raising money for the St Mark’s Building Fund and local charities!
Our concert this year will hopefully raise funds for the Church Roof Fund and our brilliant Pilgrims’ Hospice. It takes place on Wednesday 6th July at St Mark’s Church, Ramsgate, at 7pm.
Local renowned pianist, David Ruddock, will be our accompanist and guest soloist for the evening!
Entry to the concert is free but hope that people will make a generous donation and buy raffle tickets on the night so we can raise as much as possible for such worthy causes!
Ramsgate Probus Club
The PROBUS Club of Ramsgate (which in March celebrated its 50th Anniversary) continues to go from strength to strength. During June, members were treated to a packed programme of events which began on the 4th June with a visit from celebrated author and lecturer Fran Sandham who gave an entertaining talk about his challenging coast to coast walk across Africa from the Atlantic on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean near Zanzibar.
Then, on the 7th June a delightful Dinner & Theatre event took place that included an early evening meal at the San Clu Hotel followed by a short walk across the road to the Granville Theatre where members and partners enjoyed a performance of “Sweet Caroline – the ultimate tribute to Neil Diamond.”
One of the club’s regular coffee mornings took place on the 18th June and then on the 25th June there was a fun Quiz Night which was held at the Racing Greyhound. Many more events (including two holidays) are planned for later this year which members are looking forward to as well as entertaining lunch talks by professionals in August and September on such subjects as the famous Concord and TSR- 2 aircraft. Birchington Heritage Trust
The Trust’s archive contains over 800 postcards, acquired over many decades. They tell a revealing story of social history through the messages they contain, as well as some of the images portrayed.
They were – and still are – a useful means of promoting a product or particular area. Our “summer exhibition” at the Baptist Church Hall in Birchington on 5th and 6th July attracted considerable interest.
But don’t worry if you missed it as we have mounted a small display in the Museum (to view during library opening times. Access to the archives is available on Monday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 09.30 to 12.30.
The Trust’s first competition, “Postcard 500” is now on. We hope to inspire local children and adults to design their own. Blank cards can be obtained from Monty’s in Station Road or the Museum.
Individuals are encouraged to get creative, showing what it’s like for them to live (or holiday) in Birchington. The name and address of each designer must be on the front. Postcards can be “posted” into a designated box in the Co-op next to Sainsbury’s in Station Road or delivered to the Museum.
We won’t close the competition until the end of August, so that holidaymakers in Birchington can also take part. The competition will be independently judged in age groups (children 4-6, 7-10, 11-13, 14- 17 and adults) The top 3 from each category will be announced in September; further details will be publicised nearer the time.
So, please take part in this fun competition! We look forward to lots of different designs to judge.

St Peter’s Memorial Hall garden
Broadstairs Mayor, Cllr Mike Garner attended St Peter’s Memorial Hall on Thursday, 10th July to open the Hall’s new garden. Part funding for this project was awarded by Broadstairs & St. Peter’s Town Council via the Broadstairs in Bloom Gardening Grant scheme.
The garden marks 100 years since St Peter’s Memorial Hall was established in 1924 and 70 years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
It was also funded by donations from St Peter’s Old Boys and St Peter’s Memorial Hall.
Cllr Garner said: “I was delighted to be able to attend the inauguration of the new garden at St Peter’s Memorial Hall last Thursday and cut the ribbon to officially open it. The garden has been created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Hall being available to the community. It is regularly used by groups from the town and I wish them success in the future.”

Fundraiser for Oasis Domestic Abuse Service
Employees from Blaze Signs and Cygnia Maintenance came together for the second year running on Friday 27th June for a charity football match that raised an impressive £1,619 in support of Oasis Domestic Abuse Service – a local charity helping adults, children, and young people escape the devastating impact of domestic abuse across Kent and Medway.
The match was held under the floodlights at Ramsgate FC’s Southwood Stadium, drawing a crowd of friends, family, and colleagues who turned up to cheer from the sidelines and show their support. Teams were made up of employees from both companies, along with their families, creating a real sense of community and togetherness both on and off the pitch.
This year’s teams were once again led by Chris Abbott, Managing Director of Blaze Signs (pictured in the blue top, with the blue team), and Gareth Locke, Chief Operating Officer (pictured in the beige top, with the white team) – who managed their squad to victory for the second year in a row.
In a night full of energy, spirit, and purpose, the two businesses rallied behind a cause that affects countless lives across the country. With 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime (ONS, 2023), the support for Oasis couldn’t be more timely or more vital.
Oasis Domestic Abuse Service provides emergency support, long-term recovery programmes, and community outreach to help survivors rebuild their lives in safe and nurturing environments. The funds raised from the event will go directly toward supporting their frontline work.
The event was proudly sponsored by KEW Electrical and Aalco Swanley, whose support helped make the evening even more special.
It was once again a fantastic event – and we’ll absolutely be doing it again in the future.
Thanet Thunderers Boccia Club
The Boccia club is based at Trinity Resource Centre, Cliftonville.
Covid almost wiped the club out, but having been supported by “Your Leisure” until earlier this year it now continues with independently run sessions every Friday at 1.30pm, in the main hall at Trinity.
Of course, we’re always up for fund-raising and boosting membership. Our sport, Boccia, is a soft ball game played from a chair or wheelchair, using hands, feet or a ramp to launch a ball, making it accessible for everyone.
This year, having been sponsored by KCC, we’re running a Sunday Funday Boccia Competition at Foreland Fields School on 31st August.9.00AM start.
It’s free to enter for anyone with a disability that affects their limbs, including CP, or folks with intellectual or visual impairment. Every player will receive a FREE sports goody bag, a voucher for refreshments and a competitor’s medal; and there are some great prizes for the winners, too! This is a competition with low-key rules aimed at all age groups, and no prior experience of the game is necessary as instruction will be given and equipment supplied.

Ramsgate Twinning Association
Ramsgate Twinning Association is running a Summer Quiz and Bingo evening at the Red Arrow Club in Newington Road on Saturday 26th July at 7.00PM. Good prizes for quiz winners; bingo is for cash prizes, and there will be a raffle. Entries are more than welcome from everyone at £5 a head, maximum six to a team table.
Individuals are also welcome, probably to be teamed-up on the night. It’s a “bring your own food and snacks evening”, but ALL drinks must be purchased from the club bar.

Wildernesstowonderland
Hoorah, we’ve done it.
Weeks ago Youngs nursery gave Wildernesstowonderland plants to distribute to local schools and colleges to grow for planting out in our community gardens. The plants which they nurtured are growing on in Margate Station Approach gardens for us all to enjoy.

Broadstairs Town Shed
Following on the success of last year’s Discover Your Community Day we’re bringing the celebration home. Saturday 26th July, 12noon-4pm, is Discover Your Shed Day at Broadstairs Town Shed, delivering a celebration of Shed Life.
The Shed family comes in different shapes and sizes offering a wide variety of activities. This is an opportunity to discover what we do and how you can get involved.
This is a fun interactive event with lots of activities and workshops to try. So, pop along for a cuppa and a chat.
Margate Charter Day
The Mayor of Margate warmly invites you to celebrate Margate Charter Day — marking 168 years since Margate gained its freedom from Dover and became a proud Charter Town!
Pop along anytime from 5pm on Tuesday 29 July to The Shakespeare Pub to raise a glass to Margate with the Mayor and enjoy special drinks promotions, helping to raise money for the Mayor’s Fund, which supports local charities and community groups.
If you fancy a deeper dive into Margate’s fascinating past, at 7:30pm you can join a guided walking tour led by The Mysterious Historian — an experienced local guide famous for his witty, insightful tours of Margate as well as historic London neighbourhoods like Soho, Shoreditch, and Camden.
The tour will explore Margate’s:
• Early Roman, Viking, and Dutch settlers
• Rise as a health tourism centre
• Arlington House to Dreamland
• The Mechanical Elephant, a nod to David Bowie
• The town’s creative revival — with Turner as the grand finale
The walk ends at the Margate Steps just in time to enjoy the famous sunset (approx. 8:45pm).

Sunshine Ocean Records
If you are aged between 12 – 18 years old, in a band, a singer songwriter, a solo artist, a duo, then you have the perfect opportunity to be on the Broadstairs bandstand for the 4th August 2025.
This is a competition. There will be judges but with an opportunity to win future slots and a chance to perform at future events on behalf of @broadstairs8stpeters
We are working closely with Broadstairs & St Peter’s Town Council in order to give young budding musicians and the grassroots young bands a stage to perform from.

Please also make sure you have a PARENT or GUARDIAN approve your application by them applying on your behalf if you are under the age of 16 and also have a chaperone or guardian with you on the day of the event if under the age of 15.

Time capsule
To commemorate the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, students at Royal Harbour Academy were invited down to Barratt David Wilson Homes’ Spitfire Green development in Ramsgate to bury a time capsule on 11th July.
The Battle of Britain was a major air campaign fought over southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940. After the evacuation from Dunkirk and the Fall of France, Germany planned to gain air supremacy in preparation for an invasion of Great Britain.
To mark the anniversary students from Royal Harbour Academy’s Year 9 History class were tasked with creating artwork and writing letters about how life has changed over the last 85 years and the impact the battle had on Britain and in Ramsgate. The students then joined the housebuilder at Spitfire Green, which takes its name from the town’s rich RAF history, to bury the objects in a time capsule. The event took place in front of the striking spitfire sculpture onsite, which stands at two metres high with a six foot wingspan.
Richard Joyner, a History Teacher at Royal Harbour Academy, said: “Learning about Britain’s history helps students understand the events that have shaped the country they live in today. By exploring moments like the Battle of Britain allows students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the resilience of those who came before them.
“It was fantastic to have Barratt David Wilson Homes reach out to us to see if this project would fit our curriculum. At Royal Harbour Academy we value activities like this to not only bring history to life but also allow our students a chance to reflect on past events and connect the classroom to the real world. All the students enjoyed putting their creative skills to the test with a history spin!”
