Advice against bathing or entering the sea has been lifted at nine of Thanet’s beaches today (Sunday 20 July), with restrictions remaining in place at five bays.
This follows the notification from Southern Water that storm wastewater was discharged into the sea as a result of the heavy rain overnight on Friday 18 July.
Storm wastewater is a combination of sewage and surface water. Following the recent dry weather, pollution is also possible from surface water runoff.
As a result of a further discharge yesterday afternoon (Saturday 19 July) in Ramsgate, advice not to swim or go into the water remains in place at:
- Stone Bay
- Viking Bay
- Louisa Bay
- Dumpton Gap
- Ramsgate Main Sands
Warning signs will stay displayed in these locations advising beach users not to enter the water.
Bathing restrictions have been lifted from:
- West Bay
- St Mildred’s Bay
- Westbrook Bay
- Margate Main Sands
- Walpole Bay
- Botany Bay
- Kingsgate Bay
- Joss Bay
- Ramsgate Western Undercliff
The council continues to keep in contact with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to establish further updates.

Re-Nationalise, and take control.
And Southern Water boss gets his pay doubled. It’s an absolute disgrace. Southern’s performance has deteriorated over the last year, they’ve been criminally negligent in their sewage handling, and they’ve been given go-ahead for a huge rise in water charges (and are requesting an even bigger one). Nationalise them all now.
No matter who owns the Water Companies, it will be us, the customer, who pays.
Privatization has been a disaster; an exemplar of why national infrastructure should not be in the hands of private enterprize.
When the Boards were privatized, they were solvent. They didn’t owe a penny. Now, after years of private ebterprize, they are in dire straits. Some are on the brink of bankruptcy.
Where has all the money we bill payers paid gone to? Not investing in the repair and maintenance of the water and sewage infrastructure, that’s for sure.
What’s the most important thing humans need, water. It’s need for almost every thing from our health, farming, industry etc.
So good old Thatcher sold of this precious and most important item that humans need.
It’s a national disgrace that water was sold of to private companies who can hold us to ramson. Any fines these companies get its us ‘customers’ that pay it as prices just go up. As customers we should be able to decide which companies we choose to spend our cash on.
These water companies are a cartel we have to buy from them.
Just like the housing mess, the NHS mess, the water mess is all down to Thatcher.
I agree with all of you here so far. Water companies are a disgrace. No investment for many years and then claim they are close to bankruptcy. Let them do so and take them over. My bills have doubled and we use less water than the average. No more I can do. They tell us they are now investing but it all seems the same to me. No reservoirs built and no big plans to stop outfalls in seas or rivers. We are a filthy second rate country at best. Southern Water are just one example of telling us rubbish and doing little. How anyone can stand up and say they are doing well beats me. Just rubbish announcements telling us to save water when they waste most of it and make us pay double for the pleasure of keeping these turnips in a job. Offwatt are guilty of neglect and being complacent. Thank goodness they are going to be scraped. Heaven knows what will take over. Probably be run by more turnips giving in to big companies tales of woe. I like turnips but not human ones.
Bring the water companies back into public ownership is the only answer!
