World Book Day turned into World Book Week for Garlinge Primary School & Nursery when celebrations began on Wednesday (5th March).
Local author Sam Gayton visited the school and carried out writing workshops with the year 4 classes. The children were all enthusiastic and it made a great start to the fun.
Yesterday, (March 6) characters from children’s stories from every genre imaginable arrived at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery, as part of the celebrations for World Book Day 2025.
All children and staff dressed as some of their favourites as part of a packed programme of learning and fun activities in school. The magic of reading was celebrated across the school with all classes taking part in a reading activity linked to the book ‘Strong Like Me’ by Kelechi Okafor and Michaela Dias-Hayes.
English leads for the school Miss Subramaniam and Miss Beaumont led assemblies in both key stages where the book was shared and some of the wonderful characters sat around each hall were discussed.
Miss Beaumont said: “It really has been lovely seeing the children engaged with different characters and discussing their favourite books. World Book Day is always such a fun day for everyone.”
Miss Subramaniam added: “We really want to foster a love of reading and all things books here at Garlinge, days like this really add to the fun!”
The school also welcomed author Sarah Ogilvie who ran an assembly for Years 5 and 6 followed by individual class workshops for the Year 6 classes based around her book ‘101: A maths story that will tickle your ribs and blow your mind!’
Activities were completed throughout the school, ranging from creating new stories and front covers for their chosen character, creating bookmarks, paired reading across key stages and a parent afternoon for Year 2.
“World Book Day is always so much fun, we completed lots of reading activities,” said Bella, Emilia and Ava in year 6, “We chose to dress as Goldilocks and the Three Bears as we love traditional tales! We love reading for pleasure and can’t wait to spend our book tokens!”
The celebrations will culminate today (7th March) with a visit from Gemma Hunt, children’s author, who is also known for presenting the CBeebies gameshow Swashbuckle. She will be carrying out reading workshops for Years 2 and 3.
Head of School, Stephen Cope said: “Reading is an integral part our school curriculum here at Garlinge and we aim to instil a love of lifelong reading. World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity for the children and staff to celebrate and enjoy their favourite authors and share their favourite characters with their friends by dressing up.”
