Students at St Laurence CE Junior Academy have had the opportunity to try their hand at fencing in an exciting taster workshop led by Darren from Fit Fence.
The one-off session, designed to introduce children to the art of fencing in a fun and engaging way, provided pupils with an opportunity to learn the basics of the sport while developing key skills such as coordination, focus and resilience.
During the session the children donned protective gear and took to the floor, learning the essential movements, tactics, and etiquette of fencing. With Darren’s expert guidance, they practised footwork, attack and defence techniques and even had the chance to engage in friendly duels against their classmates.
The workshop was met with great enthusiasm from both students and staff, with many pupils expressing a keen interest in continuing their fencing journey beyond the school session. Teachers noted the benefits of the experience in fostering confidence, teamwork, and perseverance among the children.
One Year 5 pupil described the experience as “so much fun”. Another student shared, “I didn’t think I’d be good at fencing, but I loved it.”
The fencing taster session at St Laurence CE Junior Academy is part of the school’s commitment to providing a diverse range of sports and activities to inspire pupils and help them discover new talents.
Staff hope that the session will encourage students to explore fencing further and perhaps even pursue it as a long-term sport.
i would have thought sword fighting would be the last thing to teach youngsters ?

Excellent educational opportunity- fencing is a superb sport .
Its not an excellent sport at all! Its a martial art, and should not be encouraged. If they want to get fit I am sure a properly trained PE teacher could give them half an an hours calisthenics (exercise for cultivating gracefulness and strength) every morning, woud=ld do the trick! Teachers Baah!

Sid I have photo’s of my athletic prowess up on my study wall, pole vaulting, cycling, and most track and field from 60 years ago, and I used to swim a mile every other day for the best part of 30 years! Never one for team sports though, but watching T20/50 cricket OK, both sexes!
How interesting, glad you have shared that your study wall photos depict your stated athleticism – less fencing . Your athletic prowess of 60 years ago is obviously important to your good self. Thank you so much for sharing .Relevancy is questioned .
Also stuck on my wall is the framed joining orders for the eliminator ABA championships, in 1964! Had I been successful I would have been a contender in the Tokyo Olympics. In the intervening 60 years I have changed my views on boxing, and no longer support it, as the point is to inflict brain damage on the opponent, and receive it, which now more is known about body contact sports, is to be avoided! The reason I didn’t go to the 1964 Olympics is a long story, but international politics were involved, I wasn’t the only one,there were 8 in my team!

I’m sure many of the population have all sorts of awards, achievements, disappointments etc .It appears you have been a magnificent athletic specimen in your time , impeded by international relations , however it seems you have not fenced so your opine is without experiential basis . Just to recap this story is outlining possible future educational opportunities for schoolchildren .

These were carried out by ex servicemen who had brought home firearms, so in the late 60’s a national amnesty was held for people to hand any weapons in to police stations with no questions asked. I handed two in, with a considerable amount of ammunition, so why not do the same with pointed knives? Hand pointed knives into a police station, then ban people from owning any, it could go a long way to cutting down knife attacks!

There are for example Knife bins , knife amnesties in place already .
