Thanet council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) from today (Friday 6 December)due to the Met Office’s red weather warning.
Any known rough sleepers will be offered temporary accommodation and support from the multi-agency Thanet RISE project team during this period.
To alert the team about a rough sleeper who you believe is in need of help during this time please call 01843 577277 with as much information as possible about the location of the individual you are calling about. This number is available during normal working hours (Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm), but you can also call 01843 577000 on evenings and weekends.
The council says: “Our response aims to ensure the safety and wellbeing of anybody we believe to be rough sleeping. RISE, our rough sleeping outreach team, works hard to ensure that any known rough sleepers are proactively offered relief during extreme weather.
“It is important to note that even when SWEP is in place, some people do still turn down offers of support and we cannot forcefully intervene if someone refuses, but we will keep trying.
“RISE outreach workers will be out working extended hours, attempting to locate and contact all known rough sleepers over the coming hours and offering placement options where possible and warm clothing to anyone who refuses support.”
The council last activated SWEP on Tuesday 19 November, to keep known rough sleepers safe as temperatures plummeted.
The RISE team found temporary accommodation for ten rough sleepers, with support from multi-agency partners. By Monday 25 November the temperature had risen enough to end SWEP, but the RISE team continues to find suitable longer term accommodation for those people, in the area.
The south east has a yellow weather warning for high winds. The red warning applies to western and southern Wales as well as English counties around the Bristol Channel.
Just to be quite clear:
The Met has NOT issued a “red” warning for Thanet.
“Yellow” warnings are in place from Friday evening until 0600 Sunday morning.
“Red” warnings are in place for the South West, West Wales and the North West.
Red warning or not, it’s still very cold and windy, and at the moment it looks as if it’s going to rain.

Anyway, why can’t we put homeless people indoors all year round, instead of just when the weather is inclement?

a lot of scaremongering , with the bbc weather news getting events closed down all over the country , i dread to think what this has cost , they recently have had an obsession with snow showers , right up in the furthest point in scotland ! its handy to let the sheep know.
Two weeks ago we had Storm Burt.
People died.
An enormous amount of damage was done to various towns in the west. Complaints were made that insufficient warning of the storm was given.
Note that the warnings are published by the Met Office, and the phone “red alert” by the Government, not the BBC.
There is no red weather warning for SE England, so this article is misleading.
