Palace Cinema welcomes Chuck Chuck Baby filmmakers for special screening and Q&A

Film writer/director Janis Pugh shown, centre, on location) will attend a special event at the Palace in Broadstairs

The Palace Cinema in Broadstairs will welcome film writer/director Janis Pugh, producer Anne Beresford and possibly a cast member for a Q&A on stage after a screening during their run of Janis’s new film, romantic comedy drama Chuck Chuck Baby (15)

A joyous, heartbreaking and hilarious celebration of female friendship, Chuck Chuck Baby introduces Helen (Louise Brearly), who looks to be stuck forever in her small hometown in North Wales, doing shifts at the local chicken factory before heading back to her miserable home life, with only her close knit gang of co-workers on the production line just about keeping her head above water. But when one day an old school friend Joanne arrives back in town things begin to change and love might be found in the most unexpected places…

Described as “An uplifting crowd-pleaser” (Guardian), and ‘This summer’s best British indie film” (Big Issue), the audience can enjoy the screening before the director and producer join them for the Q&A. Janis has spoken in interviews about how the film is a loving tribute to the resilience and brilliance of the working-class women she grew up around, as well as how she wanted to focus on the lives of people over 40, female friendship, a queer love story, the transformative power of music – from  Neil Diamond’s I Am, I Said to Julie Felix’s Dirty Old Town – and the fact that it’s never too late in life!

Corinna Downing, from the Palace, said: “We’re very happy to bring Chuck Chuck Baby to the Palace – so far it’s been charming audiences at film festivals, from Edinburgh to Toronto. We are delighted to welcome not only the film but also the filmmakers to the Palace to introduce it and afterwards to talk about how the ideas for the screenplay developed and their experience during the production of the film.”

The Palace’s September programme is out now, including Chuck Chuck Baby (15), Widow Clicquot (15), Kneecap (18), Firebrand (15), I Saw The TV Glow (15), the return of the Palace Sunday Silent with Harold Lloyd’s classic comedy Girl Shy (U), special free events for Heritage Open Days, and more!

Chuck Chuck Baby (15) + Q&A with director Janis Pugh, producer Anne Beresford and cast member TBC, will take place on Sunday 8 September at 7pm. Tickets at: www.thepalacecinema.co.uk
